Be entertained by Zlwin Chew and No Noise Percussion at the launch.

Zlwin Chew is a magician based in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. His interest in magic started off during the early childhood days when his father used to bring his family for magic shows. However, he only got serious in learning the Art of Magic when he saw his friend performing some close-up magic to him many years ago. Since then he was determined to learn and taught himself magic from a few sources. It was only the beginning. Zlwin has met and performed to some of the country's most reknown people. Some of them include:
  • The 12th King of Malaysia, Sultan of Perlis, Raja Syed Sirajuddin ibni Syed Putra Jamalullail.
  • Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun. Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad.

No Noise Percussion is a percussion group based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that was formed in late 2007. Inspired by the group like Stomp Out Loud, Blue Man Group, and Wadaiko Yamato, NO NOISE PERCUSSION came up with their own style of performance. The name NO NOISE PERCUSSION itself represents the concept of applying the percussion playing technique using objects that are made for non-musical purposed, not even for producing sounds. Like household materials, water pipes, car exhaust, cones and many more. They also use recycled objects and modify them to support their performance.

Comm Acting : What the Books Don't Tell You.

Comm Acting: What the books don’t tell you.

In conjunction with CommFest 2011, we are proud to bring you Malaysia’s award winning actors and actresses for a pre-event talk entitled Comm-Acting : What the Books Don’t Tell you.

Three very interesting and very vital topics related to the differences between theatre and the big screen will be covered at the talk. If you have questioned the realness behind an actor’s screams, tears, happiness and other emotions then you would find this topic really interesting because it is about how real emotions are while acting.

A lot of us may think that acting is easy and that is all about just playing a role or pulling off a character. But little do we know that it can actually be really challenging and difficult for an actor to play a role. To be able to play a role and deliver an outstanding performance, an actor will first have to get into character for a role. So how does an actor get into character for a role you ask? Get all the information you need from the speakers present!

Being in theatre does not necessary mean being on stage. If you are camera shy but would love to be a part of theatre then the last topic that will be discussed at the talk would be the perfect platform for you to understand theatre better as it will cover the difference between directing for theatre, musical and film at the talk.

So keep your calendars free on:

Date: 13th October 2011
Time: 1.30pm – 4.00pm
Venue: Event Hall 2, Library

Brief description of speakers:

Ida Nerina, a household name in the Malaysian film industry who has appeared in a number of acclaimed Malay films such as Sepet and Susuk. Despite her increasingly hectic schedule, she is actively involved in the Malaysian Film Industry and she makes it a point to be involved with a theater piece at least once a year.

Dato’ Zahim Albakri, an award-winning actor and theatre director is also the artistic director/executive producer of Dramalab and a founding member of Instant Café Theatre. Dato’ Zahim Albakri received the Best Director award at Boh Cameronian Arts Awards 2002 and 2005, and in 2006 and 2007 together with co-director Adlin Aman Ramlle for “Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical” and “P.Ramlee The Musical” respectively. National Arts Awards for Theatre Directing is also one of the awards he received in 2006 and he since then has directed CUCI Musical Parts 1,2 and soon-to-be 3.

Gavin Yap is an actor, writer and director has been actively involved in the Malaysian entertainment scene. His debut performance in the adaption of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Ernest” gained him a nomination for best Actor and Best Newcomer in the same year. He then served as Director-In-Residence at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre from 2006 to 2008, during which in time he directed numerous production. Gavin was awarded with the National Arts Award for directing in year 2007.

Communication Festival 2011

Greetings everyone!

Taylor’s University School of Communication presents to you, CommFest 2011! This year’s theme is “Log off for Humanity, Log on to Reality” and the  main objective of this event is to bring youth together and to get them to connect by encouraging them to communicate both face-to-face and new media. It is also to highlight the importance of interpersonal communication as it enhances their relationship with their peers and it builds social skills.

CommFest 2011 will be the perfect platform for the youths to gain knowledge about human communication and get connected.  Youths will get to experience an on-ground communication activity called "Face Me" inspired by the biggest social network site, Facebook which is co-organised by MyPartners, Malaysia's top entertainment and youth marketing consultancy. This activity provides youths with an opportunity to communicate with others by bringing online experiences to real life. As a reward for communicating via fun-filled activities, youths will stand a chance  at winning exciting prizes, interact with big names from our local media industry and stand a chance to claim their name to fame.

The concept of another popular social network site, YouTube will also be transformed into an on-ground activity at CommFest 2011 and its called "Me Tube". Youths will have their shot to fame by participating in actvity such as  auditioning for "MC in Action! Search" and also as performers for our Metube stage. In addition, with the craze of online games sweeping this generation, youths will also get to take part in activities that bring their favorite application, Angry Birds, to life.

Other than games, youths will also be able to attend interactive sessions with some of the biggest names in the local media industry. Youths will also get to tap into their creative sides by attending and discovering different types of art work at our art bazaar.  These one-of-a-kind art pieces can be taken home at affordable prices.

CommFest 2011 is also inspired by today’s online media network to celebrate the positive impact of social network and how is has helped youth stay connected.

Plus, youths can keep to date with the lastest fashion trends by attending our Fashionology event the very same night. Youths will be exposed to a firsthand experience where fashion meets technology at this event. Infusing these two elements as the core attraction of Fashionology, it is set to take fashion and technology to a higher notch like never seen before leaving a lasting impression of what can be done with fashion and revolutionized technology in this era of media.
